Dutch designer Mieke Meijer compresses and bonds old newspapers so that the print is still legible, but the resulting product has the grain and feel of original wood:
Every day, piles of newspapers are discarded and recycled into new paper. Mieke Meijer has come up with a solution to use this surplus of paper into a renewed material. When a NewspaperWood log is cut, the layers of paper appear like lines of a wood grain or the rings of a tree and therefore resembles the asethetic of real wood. The material can be cut, milled and sanded and generally treated like any other type of wood.

There seem to be no end of things tagged with the word rainbow in nature. Well, here is another – the Rainbow Eucalyptus. With a quite spectacular trunk it is a surprise that its main use is the production of pulpwood, to make white paper. Go figure.

Painter Jeff Canham and woodworker Luke Bartels stumbled upon the idea to make birdhouses while sharing a studio space together in San Francisco. Now on view at local boutique The Curiosity Shoppe, their show “For the Birds” shows the mix of complimentary skills born of this friendship, a collection of birdhouses cleverly trimmed to mimic “seedy” urban counterparts.
Well-known for signage and design work for the likes of McSweeney’s Panorama newspaper, Canham remarks that the show is “a really great marriage of both our skills.” The bird abodes grew from an earlier collaborative project, in which the team made small pianos with painted faces. Realizing the shape echoed traditional birdhouses, “For the Birds” was born.

In 2005 Dr. Maressa Orzack, a Clinical Associate in Psychology at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, estimated that 40% of the players of World of Warcraft were addicted, but she did not indicate a source for the estimate, so caution should be exercised when interpreting these data.

Images have emerged for a planned 120 metre tower from artist a la mode Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond. What will become Britain’s tallest piece of public art will begin construction on the Olympic site almost immediately, for completion next year.
The structure, dubbed ‘Orbit’ resembles a topologically improbable roller coaster attempting to ingest previous Anish Kapoor sculptures. What’s not to love? Oh, right, the price tag. £19 million. Ouch. We hope they know what they’re doing.
